Industrial Work

Industrial locations intrigues me, there are many old factories and run down areas located near my own home, which gives me possible photographic locations that are only a short walk away.

Luckily, and thankfully, with some of the factories that are quite dangerous, or locations that you don't normally have access too, I know people who work to protect those areas, and people who own the land; making it a lot safer for me to go and investigate these areas.

These areas intrigue me for many reasons, a lot of the time it's due to decay and rust around the framing and structures of the buildings. There's something about documenting them falling apart and in this vulnerable state that I find almost therapeutic.

There always seems to be a kind of dangerous element as well, due to the state of some of the areas I go and visit, even though I know that the building itself is perfectly safe, there is something about the photographs that I capture that make it seem like I somewhere with potential danger.

My habit of capturing wasteful areas, and derelict sites came from my first year at University, and my use of materials that I would find whilst investigating different areas. Since then I've still investigated new locations around Derby and Ilkeston.

Backlit.

Located in Nottingham, Backlit gallery is a large building covered in dust from it's old working days. The gallery is used mainly for local artist exhibitions that are held on the fourth floor (if I remember correctly). The space itself is wide open, has plenty of direct sunlight coming in and it has a feel to it all that let's you know that it was an industrial building.
The actual structure of the building has all been kept original, making it an interesting location for you to display your work and visit.

As there is plenty of potential for photographic work for this building, I am planning on speaking to someone at the location to see if I can have the opportunity to go onto the other levels in order to gain more documentation of the building.

I do wish that you could have access to the different floors or some other sections of the buildings, unfortunately it's mainly offices on the other floors. But the whole space would make for brilliant photographic opportunities and as it has a very original and timely atmosphere to it.

These images where then taken forward with some photo-manipulation work, where I mainly overlap and create new edited images that are end up having quite a basic overall look to them, but there are many other images added in.
(You can find those pieces by going to the Other Work tab).

Contain.

Located near an old factory behind the nutbrook trail, This oddly placed Shipping container has been sat there for quite some time. It's currently covered in Graffiti and still hasn't been removed from the site.
it originally had nothing inside of it, but it now has random materials and items that have been dumped inside, there where some simple materials like bits of metal, glass bottles and wires in there. During my first visit they where still quite fresh, but when I returned a month later the materials had then rusted and become caked in dirt, creating what seemed like a new pile of wasted materials.

I took quite a few of these materials back to the studios in Derby within my second semester of my first year at university, these pieces where then turned into abstract pieces of work.
